Memories

There are park benches which line the Seawall walk around Stanley Park. This is a blog that intends to capture as many of the plaque inscriptions which are a part of the history of Vancouver. Some of them are memorials, others are shrines, but personally, it's the ones that wish us well which make me smile.

The blog is broken up into sections of the 8.8 km+ walk to help catergorise the inscriptions. Some will be associated with nearby streets, while others will have notable landmarks. While I will attempt to be as accurate as possible, I am open to assistance in correcting any errors.

I hope that you will find the time to visit this living memory of Vancouver and take a moment to appreciate the gift each park bench represents.

Stanley Park & Seawall

Stanley Park is a 404.9 hectare (1,000 acre) urban park bordering downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was opened in 1888 by Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor-General of Canada.

It is the largest city-operated park in Canada and the third largest in North America. It is more than 10% larger than New York City's Central Park and almost half the size of London's Richmond Park.The park attracts an estimated eight million visitors every year, including locals and tourists, who come for its recreational facilities and its natural attributes. An 8.8 kilometre (5.5 mile) seawall path circles the park, which is used by 2.5 million pedestrians, cyclists, and inline skaters every year. Much of the park remains forested with an estimated half million trees that can be as tall as 76 metres (250 ft) and hundreds of years old.

The Seawall in Vancouver, Canada is a stone wall that was constructed around the perimeter of Stanley Park to prevent the erosion of the park's foreshore. Colloquially, the term also denotes the pedestrian, bicycle, and roller blading pathway on the seawall, and which has been extended far outside the parameters of Stanley Park. It has become one of the most used features of the park by both locals and tourists. Despite perennial conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and inline skaters, park users consider the seawall to be the most important feature of Stanley Park and it is the most used park facility.

Sweet Memories

I write this with a heavy heart, as I am no longer in Vancouver.

I have finally found the time to finish this little project of sweet memories and I hope you enjoy reading as much as I did.

There are also park benches along Canada Place and inside the actual (Stanley) Park, that I never got around to documenting. If you have the time, feel free to pass by them and remember those of us who have passed on before.
